Ever since The Beatles visited Miami Beach fifty years ago, the predominant motif of the hotels has been glamour, sensuality, and buzz. While nobody will mistake South Beach hotels for the Smithsonians, culture and creativity interweave themselves throughout many hotels.
Slowly but surely, a serious cultural cartel has proliferated throughout the hotels and organizations of South Beach. It began in the early 1990’s with the fight to preserve the Art Deco era hotels slated for demolition by developers. That historical inflection point prevented a South Beach studded with fifty story towers, like Sunny Isles just 10 miles north, which is a nice beach town dominated by strip malls. Continue reading
Humanity knows that Florida is fun to visit. Everyone reads about Miami Beach and all the glitz, partying, sexuality, and bacchanal on display. But few realize the gem hidden on Florida’s other coast, on the Gulf of Mexico. I’m talking about Continue reading
The Pirates of the Caribbean is full of pirate invasions, ruthless swindlers, and lowbrow tactics. That’s why we love the movies. But you can get a real pirate experience each year in Tampa during the Gasparilla Invasion. That’s right, “real” pirates on real ships navigate the non-perilous waters of Tampa Bay to land, loot, and pillage Tampa. Staid, white-collar, local business people transform themselves into pirates for a few days, unleashing a flood of fake coins and beaded necklaces. Continue reading
Tampa hotels have always been a favorite for conferences and corporate meetings, despite the lack of hotels in its top nightlife neighborhoods, Ybor City and Hyde Park. Thankfully, the situation is improving. The city announced plans for a hotel and condominium in the historic Ybor City. Ybor City emerged from a downtrodden historic district to Tampa Bay party central in the 1990’s. Famous for its Latin and Italian restaurants, as well as some great bars, Continue reading
While the rest of the world awaits New Year’s Eve parties, in Miami Beach no lull exists, as holiday parties continue unabated. With the influx of vacationing New Yorkers, things are buzzing. Soho House Miami Beach hosted a party promoting an upcoming luxury condominium development in Hollywood Beach, Costa Hollywood Condo. Guests enjoyed cooling ocean breezes while indulging cocktails and paella around the pool and lawn of Soho.
The mid-beach section of Miami Beach continues its renaissance. As mentioned in an earlier post, the grandest is the Faena Development, to be located between The Fontainebleau and the W Hotel South Beach. The Faena development will straddle both sides of Collins Avenue, hosting ocean front as well as creek side properties.
Taking up seven square blocks, the hotel will target luxury travelers and business groups, competing with W South Beach, Setai, Delano, and the in-construction One Hotel. Adding to Miami Beach’s reputation as a design leader, the Faena District contracted architects Baz Luhmann and Catherine Martin.
